computertomography and MRI of the heart
The cardiac computed tomography is a modern X-ray technique. Detailed diagnoses of the heart and coronary arteries can be performed with the result of high resolution and faster imaging.
This is a non-invasive investigation, so it no operation in the body such as in the introduction of a catheter. The actual investigation only takes a few minutes and the image acquisition, such as a 256-slice computed tomography in the cooperating centers, within seconds of time. Changes in the vessel walls can be detected, which are due to plaque deposits and called attention to the presence of coronary heart disease.
These calcium deposits do not necessarily be accompanied with a narrowing of the coronary arteries. But also small plaques, that do not constrict the vessel cross-section, can suddenly rupture and lead to a complete vessel occlusion, the most common cause of a heart attack.
The proof of calcification with cardiac CT allows the early detection of a heart attack risk. This is important. the reduction of risk factors, such as taking medications to lower blood lipid levels, reduce the probability for a myocardial infarction significantly. Such an examination is recommended for patients, who have no symptoms but have risk factors. These include in particular the presence of coronary heart disease of relatives, elevated cholesterol and blood pressure, nicotin, as well as a present diabetes.
In addition, the cardiac CT allows also to examine the coronary arteries directly constrictions, the so-called stenosis or occlusions. For this diagnosis an iodine-containing X-ray contrast agent is administered to the patient. The CT allows an accurate assessment of the coronary arteries or bypass grafts in three-dimensional reconstructions. We are in close cooperation experienced centers.

Cardiac MRI is an investigation, that can visualize the heart without the use of x-rays or radioactive substances in any level. It can show the function of the heart and permits a precise evaluation of wall motion and the pumping function.
Using special MRI techniques, which require intravenous administration of contrast medium, tissue properties of the heart can be visualized. Thus, conclusions about inflammation of the heart muscle, regional cardiac perfusion failure or heart attack in the past can be shown.
In the application of cardiac MRI responses arise in question:
- Functional assessment of the heart
- Heart failure
- Coronary heart disease (circulation problems in the coronary arteries)
- Representation of a heart attack area
- Heart muscle inflammation
- Heart valves fail
- Congenital heart defects.
We only work with centers that are equipped with the latest equipment and also allow shortest term appointment for our patients.
